    Dear USEHA Members,

    Are you looking for more leadership opportunities, a resume builder, and an opportunity to interact with fellow environmental health professionals from the uniformed services? Now is your opportunity to submit a self-nomination to serve on the Uniformed Services Environmental Health Association (USEHA) Executive Council. 


    We are now accepting self-nominations for the following positions in the upcoming 2023 USEHA Officer Elections:

    • President-Elect: Term as President-Elect begins July 2023. This person commits to serving as the President beginning in around July of 2025. The individual may be from any Uniformed Service, including retirees, except Public Health Service, as the current President-Elect is a PHS officer.
    • Vice President: Individual may be from any Uniformed Service, including retirees; term begins July 2023.
    • Secretary/Treasurer: Individual may be from any Uniformed Service, including retirees; term begins July 2023.

    Term lengths are for two full years. The Vice President may serve two successive terms. Candidates for officer positions must be both NEHA and USEHA members in good standing with the organization. 


    Send self-nominations to LT Grace Santos at Grace.Santos@fda.hhs.gov. The self-nomination should include your name, rank, branch of service, the position you wish to be elected to, and a brief statement (less than a page) explaining why you wish to serve in the position. You must include a statement that you have obtained supervisory approval to commit to a limited number of hours per month during the regular workday as an officer of USEHA. Nominations are due 20 April 2023.


    If your USEHA membership has lapsed and you would like to renew, please visit our website at www.useha.org to update your account or create a new member account. In addition, please feel free to forward this information along to any eligible person who may be interested.

    The Uniformed Services Environmental Health Association (USEHA) proudly announces its annual Technical Educational Program and Business Meeting to be held during the NEHA Annual Educational Conference (AEC) & Exhibition (see: https://www.neha.org/aec). The specific location/room for the USEHA presentations is to be determined.


    USEHA is seeking presentations that address the latest advances and concerns in environmental/public health that are associated with the uniformed services. The areas of interest cover the broad spectrum of environmental health disciplines to include, but are not limited to, base, post, and installation activities; field and line activities; research and development initiatives; deployments; and other related areas.


    The technical presentations are designed to educate and inform people with an interest or career in environmental/ public health (which includes Force Health Protection), build contacts, exchange information, and discover new and practical solutions to environmental health issues. Practical applications in the uniformed services will be emphasized along with the latest in proven emerging technologies. Recent research activities in the environmental/public health area are also of interest.

    The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) will be holding an Environmental Health Training in Emergency Response (EHTER) Operations course on February 26 - March 04 & May 21-27, 2023 at its training facilities in Anniston, AL. The EHTER Ops training is a five-day course which provides participants with the operations-level knowledge and skills needed to respond to incidents of natural- or human-caused disaster and to use appropriate protocols and equipment to achieve mission objectives. Participants are trained to assess a variety of environments, determine risks, plan for a team response, select equipment and instrumentation appropriate to the event, perform the required tasks according to environmental health response protocols, and perform reporting and follow-up as instructed. This is a hands-on application-based course where participants conduct responses to simulated disaster events. Participants address environmental health issues related to sewage contamination, emergency shelters, water contamination, mass feeding, environmental contamination, responder safety and health, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and building hazards. There is no cost to attend for those from state, local, tribal, and territorial jurisdictions. Federal responders are required to pay tuition, travel, food, and lodging.     Greetings,

    The Naval Safety and Environmental Training Center presents the 31st Annual Joint Safety and Environmental Professional Development Symposium (PDS) convening April 17-21, 2023.  The PDS is a professional development opportunity for Department of Defense uniformed and civilian professionals to share innovative ideas, new trends and information in areas of safety and occupational health, environmental protection, and industrial hygiene. The event is hosted using a virtual conferencing tool and is provided at no cost to presenters or attendees.

    The 30th Annual Joint Safety and Environmental Professional Development Symposium provided 100+ educational sessions to more than 2,900 registered participants from 50 states, one United States territory, and 35 countries. Participants’ backgrounds ranged from safety, industrial hygiene, environmental, occupational health, public health, radiation health, and occupational medicine.

    The conference planning team is looking for claimant meeting sponsors and breakout session presenters.  All meetings and sessions will be hosted virtually, allowing presentations from across the globe. All meetings and sessions will provide users a certificate of attendance documenting continuing education credits earned. Claimant meeting sponsors and breakout session presenters will be assigned a PDS point of contact to assist before and during the event. Training on how to use the technology to present content and engage a virtual audience will be provided.

    Breakout Presentations
    from all government, industry, and academic agencies will be considered. Please note, we are not accepting presenters requesting presenter fees. No compensation will be provided. Presenters have the opportunity to reach a large target audience during their virtual session. The average session attendance has been over 100 participants for several years. Presentations may cover anything within the following broad topics:

    • Environmental Protection
    • General Safety
    • Health and Safety for Disaster Response and Recovery
    • Industrial Hygiene
    • Occupational Medicine
    • Occupational Safety and Health
    • Operational Safety
    • Radiation and Laser Safety

    Please consider sharing your knowledge and experience by presenting at the 2023 PDS. If you are interested in presenting, copy and paste the submissions link below into your browser.     Claimant meetings provide up to 15 different organizations the opportunity to host a one-day conference on April 17, 2023. This time will allow organizations the opportunity to host a session specific to their organization. Topics can range from trending issues, updates, training, etc. The

    meeting sponsor will be responsible for the agenda and content presented during the meeting. All content must be unclassified and releasable to the public.

    In Preparation for 2023 NEHA AEC, the USEHA EC has established the following efforts:


    • Invite a Keynote speaker for the 2023 NEHA/USEHA day
    • Coordinate with Dr. Dyjack (NEHA Executive Director) to ask for a letter of support for services to attend NEHA conference
    • Organize a social event for USEHA
    • Reach out to Environmental Health (EH) students/professionals from local school and military bases to let them know about NEHA/USEHA and invite them to attend NEHA
    • USEHA booth/poster at NEHA
    • Share USEHA day with our various networks, ex. USPHS EHO PAC
    • Develop a USEHA informational presentation for uniformed services to present at USEHA

    Other USEHA priorities for this operational year:

    • Recruit at least 1 (maybe 2) professional presenter to present on technical topics – such as GIS mapping, epidemiology or a current topic in EH
    • Sharing of training and educational information for growth to others within EH
    • Research way to support USEHA members in pursing/achieving their REHS

    USEHA will solicit volunteers to help with these efforts in early 2023.

    We are pleased to announce that the Uniformed Services Environmental Health Association (USEHA) will offer a scholarship for full conference registration to the 2022 National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) Annual Educational Conference, including the USEHA Educational Sessions and annual business meeting.

     

    This year's NEHA conference will be held in Spokane, Washington from 28 June – 1 July 2022. This is a great opportunity to attend the conference and acquire continuing education credits, network with fellow environmental health professionals, and learn about the latest innovations and research in environmental health practice.

     

    The scholarship includes:

    • Full conference registration paid directly to NEHA.
    • $500 stipend paid directly to the scholarship recipient to put towards lodging, meals, and other incidentals.

    Scholarship applicants must be a USEHA member in good standing with our organization.

    Members of the USEHA Executive Council are NOT eligible.

     

    To apply for the scholarship, submit a statement of purpose (less than one page) indicating what you hope to gain from attending the NEHA conference. Include your name, rank, branch of service, and contact information. Submit your statement of purpose to MAJ Nathaniel Sheehan at nathaniel.p.sheehan.mil@army.mil by April 4, 2022. All applications will be reviewed by the USEHA Executive Council and a scholarship recipient selected and notified by Tuesday, April 12, 2022.
